Now it was a matter of waiting. I slipped back into McGreevy’s and took a table where I could watch Rory and Delinda. She looked like she was trying to comfort him. He looked like he didn’t want to be comforted. He kept shaking her hand off him. At least they ordered another round of beer.

I nursed a Corona and watched some of the Lakers game. The Lakers were in a rebuilding program after the retirement of Kobe Bryant. They were young and looked like they had some swagger. It would take some time to overtake the Warriors, who looked to be dominant for several more years.

The sports bar is the new Church of the Hot-Blooded Male. Communion is not by wine and wafer, but by beer and buffalo wing. The priests are the bartenders. They will hear your confession and offer you absolution by way of Absolut. You perform an act of penance by buying a round of drinks. In place of a crucifix is a big-screen TV. You don’t pray, you cheer. Your comfort does not come from knowing the will of God. It comes from knowing the stats of your favorite team.

My waitress came by and asked me if I’d like another beer. Mine was only half gone, but at the Church of the HBM it is sacrilegious to allow the communion cups—bottles—to reach empty without the offer of another. I told her thanks, but I was okay for now.

Ira texted me. He said the detective, Alderson, was coming to the bar, and that He is not happy.

Apparently, it was not my lot in life to make others happy.

Twenty minutes went by. Then Rory and Derinda got up and started for the front door.
